Lucid is Nona Fender of Bawdy Church

Lucid has two personalities (at least.) She created her alternate persona Nona Fender so that she could express her East Coast rawness to her West Coast community. She came to Mission Control before Kinky Salon existed, has seen it blossom over the last 15 years, and has some great stories about her early days of exploring open sexuality.

You can experience the rockstar Nona first hand with her vaudeville “rewilding” revival at Bawdy Church on Oct 16

Club Kiss Is Back With a BANG!

Club Kiss is my “Lifestyle” event. It’s a sexually progressive play party, with more of a heteronormative vibe than Kinky Salon. It’s consent based, bi friendly (including guys) and a bit too kinky for tradional swingers. The party went on a bit of a hiatus after we lost the Mission Control space. With my book, Kinky Salon and the world tour I didn’t have time to keep it up.
That all changed a few months ago when I started working with Ben Fuller from Bronze. He’s a big fan of the community, and brought much needed life and energy into the mix, helping to start it up again. We’ve been throwing some kick ass parties together for the last few months and we’ve decided to make it official. We’ve made a commitment to throw monthly events once the new space opens, and in the meantime we’ve got asummer party planned at SPACE and a massive Halloween spectacle on October 24th at Danzhaus.
Club Kiss is back with a BANG. I’m the Creative Director, and I now have an awesome Production Manager at the helm. We’re a great team and I’m looking forward to all the crazy parties we’re going to throw together.
YEE HA!

The 7 Core Values of Kinky Salon

PLAYFUL, SAFER, INCLUSIVE, CREATIVE, COMMUNITY SPIRITED, SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS, SEXUALLY PROGRESSIVE

  • PLAYFUL
Humor is a vital component of every creative element of Kinky Salon. The cabaret is funny. Costumes are ridiculous. The music is upbeat and fun. The décor is colorful and silly. We combine all those factors to create a playful environment that is less intimidating and friendlier than most sex culture spaces.
  • SAFER
We use three basic strategies to create safety at Kinky Salon: The PAL system, the Agreements, and Walkaround Hosts. The PAL system requires that every guest arrives and leaves with someone, and that they are responsible for that person while they’re at the party. They don’t have to be a date, or any particular gender. You can read the complete PAL system here.
The Agreements are the list of dos and don’ts that we post at the door and read out to every attendee, so everyone knows what behavior is expected. We use volunteers to keep an eye on things and make sure these standards are maintained. We aren’t shy about ejecting people who don’t play by the rules. You can read the complete Charter here.
Walkaround Hosts are the eyes and the ears of the party. During the event they mingle with the crowd, check on the different spaces, and make sure the event is going smoothly.
  • INCLUSIVE
We don’t judge potential guests on looks, age, or sexual orientation. Everyone is welcome at Kinky Salon. We are queer friendly, body positive and our entry policy is one big YES. Some events have membership applications to fill out, but they’re there to put you in the right mindset for the event, not to judge you.
  • CREATIVE
Every event has a theme to pique the imagination of the community. We value homemade, hot glued, janky costumes over fancy store-bought ones. Costumes give every guest the opportunity to be creative.
The cabaret, interactive performances, and decor allow us to showcase the creativity of the community, and it all reflects the theme of the event. Even the music the DJ plays is thematic.
  • COMMUNITY SPIRITED
Kinky Salon is built on volunteerism and collaboration. Rather than being a product created for consumption, it’s an invitation to participate. The community continues between events with social networking and gatherings. The events are not created for individual financial gain.
  • SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS
As a global community we advocate the liberation of sexuality, not just as a hedonistic pursuit, but also as a means of furthering progressive culture. We understand the complexities of the world we live in, and we strive to be most excellent in all our interactions.
  • SEXUALLY PROGRESSIVE
Sexuality is integrated into the social fabric of the community. At the parties there are playspaces for getting sexually adventurous, but there’s no pressure to participate. There’s also plenty of space for flirting and socializing.
Progressive sexuality isn’t just about having sex at parties, it means understanding the cultural landscape of sex, and supporting the significant changes happening in our society. These include ideas like the importance of consent, the deception of the binary gender narrative, the need for feminism and an exploration of masculinity, and the dangers of sexual objectification.

The Search for a Forever Home Continues

Since we lost our home on Mission Street an awesome team of dedicated folks have continued, unceasingly, the search for a new forever home. Although social media might tell you that finding a space in the Bay Area is impossible, and that big business has pushed the arts and counter culture out completely, I wanted to reassure you that there is hope. The reality on the ground is that there are spaces available that we can afford, but none of them have been perfect. Our temporary venues at SPACE, Alchemy and Danzhaus, while no ideal, have served us well, and the community has survived a disaster that would have been the end for most. Where we go next is still unknown, but I would like to put forth the proposal that the tide is turning. How about if Mission Control is the turning point? I’m going to do that California hippy thing for a minute and ask that you all hold the image in your heart of the perfect home for Mission Control.

Kinky Salon Denver and An Audiobook Sample

Kinky Salon Denver
I’m excited to announce that there’s a new Kinky Salon opening! On August 8th it will be the inaugral event of Kinky Salon Denver. I met the team this weekend. They are wonderful people with lots of experience throwing sexy events. They have connections with Decompression, Gay Pride and the Kink scene, which sounds like a perfect combo to me. We bonded over brunch talking about community building, art and creator culture. I’ll be heading out there for the first event in August. You should come with me! I’m thrilled to have our very first event in Middle America. Coming next (cross fingers) is Seattle. There’s a plan brewing up there and a lot of interest. If you want to join the secret Facebook groups of either of these events please let me know and I’ll add you.
Kinky Salon Confessions Podcast
This podcast is a little bit different. People keep asking me if I can do an audiobook of my memoir, but I haven’t had the time or the resources to make it happen. So for this podcast I thought I’d read you the first few chapters of my book. In a way it’s my Kinky Salon confession. I hope you enjoy it! You can buy the book on Amazon if you get hooked.
